The French leader has called upon his former prime minister to resume duties as French prime minister a mere four days after he left the post, causing a period of intense uncertainty and instability.

Macron declared on Friday evening, shortly after gathering key political groups in one place at the official residence, omitting the representatives of the extremist parties.

His reappointment shocked many, as he said on national TV recently that he was not interested in returning and his task was complete.

Doubts remain whether he will be able to form a government, but he will have to start immediately. He faces a cut-off on the start of the week to present the annual budget before lawmakers.

Political Challenges and Economic Pressures

The Élysée announced the president had “tasked [Lecornu] with forming a government”, and Macron's entourage implied he had been given “carte blanche” to act.

Lecornu, who is one of a trusted associate, then published a detailed message on an online platform in which he agreed to take on as an obligation the task assigned by the president, to make every effort to secure a national budget by the year's conclusion and respond to the everyday problems of our compatriots.

Ideological disagreements over how to reduce government borrowing and balance the books have caused the fall of two of the past three prime ministers in the last year, so his task is enormous.

The nation's debt recently was almost 114% of national income – the number three in the eurozone – and the annual fiscal gap is projected to reach 5.4% of economic output.

Lecornu emphasized that “no-one will be able to shirk” the need of fixing the nation's budget. Given the limited time before the conclusion of his term, he advised that those in the cabinet would have to delay their presidential ambitions.

Leading Without Support

Adding to the difficulty for the prime minister is that he will face a parliamentary test in a parliament where Macron has lacks sufficient support to back him. The president's popularity plummeted in the latest survey, according to research that put his approval rating on 14 percent.

Jordan Bardella of the far-right National Rally, which was not invited of Macron's talks with party leaders on the end of the week, remarked that the prime minister's return, by a president increasingly isolated at the Élysée, is a poor decision.

They would immediately bring a vote of no confidence against a failing government, whose only reason for being was dreading polls, he continued.

Seeking Support

The prime minister at least understands the obstacles he faces as he tries to build a coalition, because he has already spent two days lately meeting with factions that might participate in his administration.

By themselves, the centrist parties lack a majority, and there are divisions within the right-leaning party who have supported the ruling coalition since he lost his majority in recent polls.

So Lecornu will consider progressive groups for potential support.

In an attempt to court the left, the president's advisors suggested the president was evaluating a pause to part of his controversial retirement changes implemented recently which extended working life from 62 to 64.

It was insufficient of what socialist figures wanted, as they were expecting he would appoint a leader from the left. Olivier Faure of the Socialists commented lacking commitments, they would withhold backing for the premier.

The Communist figure from the left-wing party stated following discussions that the progressive camp wanted substantive shifts, and a premier from the central bloc would not be accepted by the citizens.

Greens leader Marine Tondelier said she was “stunned” the president had provided few concessions to the left, adding that outcomes would be negative.
