European Union Naval Forces Free Crew After Somalia Pirate Attack on Oil Tanker

Naval Operation
The Hellas Aphrodite was captured by pirates on Thursday

EU maritime units have successfully rescued two dozen crew members from a Maltese-flagged petroleum vessel that was attacked by sea robbers off the shoreline of Somalia.

The Hellas Aphrodite, which was carrying petrol from Indian ports to South African destinations, was taken over on Thursday when armed pirates began shooting with automatic weapons and rocket-propelled grenades before boarding the ship.

The crew locked themselves inside a secure safe room while the pirates took control of the marine transport.

Mission Accomplished

A naval vessel, functioning under the European Union's maritime security operation, reached the tanker on the following day. Elite military units boarded the vessel and found all two dozen sailors unharmed.

"The crew is safe and no injuries have been documented. Throughout the ordeal, they stayed in the secure area in direct contact with command center," officials stated, adding that a "demonstration of power" had prompted the pirates to leave the vessel before the naval unit reached the location.

Ongoing Threat

Officials added that the danger level in the region "continues to be serious" as the pirates are still in the vicinity.

The mission utilized a helicopter, unmanned aerial vehicle and reconnaissance plane. Just hours earlier, another ship in the same area was targeted by a fast boat but successfully avoided it.

Return of Maritime Crime

This incident marks the most recent in a series of attacks that have created concern about a renewal of piracy in the region.

Piracy operations had decreased when global maritime security and protective protocols were implemented after peaking more than a ten years past.

Nevertheless, assaults by Yemen's Houthi rebels on vessels in the Arabian Sea, which have been carried out for the past two years, have led vessels to be rerouted through the African coastline - opening up new opportunities for Somali gangs.

Incident Data

  • Seven reported incidents of piracy took place off the shoreline of the Somali region in the previous year
  • Several vessel takeovers were recorded among these incidents
  • Only one incident of maritime crime was reported in 2023

Industry professionals are closely watching the developments as vessel operators travel through these increasingly dangerous waters.
