French Farm Reports Robbery of €90K Value of Escargot

Empty Shelves at Snail Farm After Major Theft

Burglars made off with snails worth ninety thousand euros from a producer in northern France that provides for gourmet eateries.

L'Escargot Des Grands Crus in Bouzy, close to the city of Reims, stated that its entire inventory of both fresh and frozen snails was taken—a “real blow” just ahead of the festive period.

The intruders gained entry to the farm during the night leading to Monday, slicing through a border fence before entering farm buildings.

Law enforcement were notified days after the incident, and officers are currently pursuing leads.

Meanwhile, the farm is striving to restock to satisfy holiday demand from clients.

Escargot: A Traditional French Delicacy

Escargot are considered a French delicacy, typically prepared in garlic butter or white wine before being removed from their shells.

Farmers in France typically experience a surge in demand during the month of December, as consumers treat themselves with the specialty for Christmas Eve and New Year's Day celebrations.

“This is definitely not the type of announcement we thought we’d share as the holidays near,” L'Escargot Des Grands Crus stated in a statement regarding the incident.

The statement went on to describe the event as “surprising, bewildering, and a real blow to the whole staff,” noting, “We are trying our best to replenish our inventory to meet the needs of our clients for the festive period.”

Consequences of the Robbery

Images taken after the burglary reveal shelves and refrigerators nearly cleared out of escargot items.

“An entire section of finished products was taken from the store, and unprocessed inventory from my laboratory,” the farm manager explained.

“This represented my holiday season inventory… We had precisely enough to get through the holidays without any worries.”

This producer has previously supplied establishments such as award-winning venues in the region, as well as specialty food shops and individual customers.

Currently, the business is focused on recovering and making sure that end-of-year demand can still be met in spite of the significant setback.
