A trio of officers perished and at least 15 others were hurt in a seemingly premeditated gas explosion at a rural property in northern Italy.

How It Happened

The explosion took place as law enforcement and fire personnel entered the residence in the vicinity of the Verona region to execute an eviction order for a brother and sister trio in their late 50s and mid-60s.

Each of the three victims who died were members of the Carabinieri military police.

Legal Proceedings

One male and one female got detained at the site and a third person who ran away following the blast was located soon after. The trio have been taken to the hospital.

The explosion could be heard some 5km (3 miles) away and footage from the location showed the structure reduced to a heap of debris.

“We are in a period of mourning,” stated the Minister of the Interior Minister Piantedosi, who noted that efforts had been made to remove the three siblings in the past.

Background and Motive

The leader of the region of Veneto, President Zaia, said the property was subject to an eviction order due to debts incurred by the siblings.

Conflict resolution experts had been dispatched to speak to the brothers and sister who had secured themselves into the property. When the police came soon after 03:00 (01:00 GMT), authorities believe one of the residents triggered the detonation.

“When we entered the property, we faced an utterly insane act,” regional commander the police commander told news outlets.

A propane tank had been ignited, and the blast immediately struck our members,” he added.

Molotov cocktails were also discovered at the residence, the Interior Minister confirmed.

Impact Assessment

Injured individuals by the blast comprised 11 other members of the military police as well as three members of national police and a fire services member.

As stated by the prosecuting attorney, the property was in a dilapidated shape and had no electricity.

He was convinced the explosion had happened on a story above the doorway and informed journalists it was a “deliberate and pre-planned murder”. Just prior to the incident, he revealed members had “noticed a hissing sound, probably the propane tanks being activated”.

Community Reaction

“Everyone was aware the circumstances were severe,” nearby inhabitants told Italian media, mentioning that the trio had earlier warned to “detonate the property” rather than be evicted.

“The incident exacted a ‘dreadful, extremely sad and dramatic price’.”

Minister of Defence the Defence Minister stood alongside other elected representatives in honoring the three officers who had been killed in the line of duty.
