Harvard ex-president Summers Resigns from AI Company's Directors
One-time economic leader the Harvard professor is departing from the board at OpenAI, just several days after a collection of digital correspondence between him and deceased financier the disgraced billionaire became public.
He stated in a statement that he was "appreciative for the opportunity to have contributed, enthusiastic about the potential of the company, and look forward tracking their progress".
The former Harvard president, who once led Harvard University, announced on earlier this week that he would be stepping back from public responsibilities due to his association with Jeffrey Epstein.
Digital Correspondence
The freshly disclosed messages showed that Summers exchanged messages with Epstein until the day before his 2019 arrest for accused trafficking of young people.
In additional comments, the technology organization expressed it understood the economist's determination to resign.
"We appreciate his significant contributions and the viewpoint he provided to the directors," OpenAI commented.
Congressional Action
This news follows after the entire Congress of the US legislature voted on Tuesday to pass a bill that would require the federal prosecutors to make public its records on Epstein.
The bill will subsequently proceed to the office of US President Donald Trump for endorsement. He has indicated he intends to endorse the bill, after changing his view on the matter following pressure from his supporters.
Correspondence Findings
A batch of Epstein-related messages disclosed by the House Oversight Committee recently included numerous prominent individuals in the Epstein's past associates, without indicating any legal wrongdoing by those people.
The emails indicated that the economist and the financier regularly had dinners together, with he often seeking to connect the official to influential international personalities.
Personal Response
After the correspondence were made available with the general audience, Summers said he took "total ownership for my ill-advised decision to continue corresponding with the financier".
He continued that he desired "to restore confidence and mend connections with the persons closest to me".
Career Background
The professor held senior posts under Democratic administrations; functioning as economic leader under President Clinton, and as leader of the White House economic team under President Obama.
He headed Harvard from five years and is still a professor there. When announcing his departure from public duties recently on this week, he stated he would continue his educational duties.
Further Repercussions
Following Summers' declaration on earlier this week, the Center for American Progress, a liberal research organization in Washington where Summers was a senior fellow, verified that he was no longer connected with the organization.
Summers became part of the directorate of the technology firm, which develops the language model, in 2023 - following a unsuccessful effort to oust its chief executive Sam Altman.
