Together Is Now Streaming, and It Could Strengthen or Shatter Your Relationship.

We present a test for those in enduring partnerships who enjoy the horror genre: Sit down with your significant other and watch Together. This 2025 indie hit recently had its launch on a streaming platform on Hulu. On the surface, it could look like standard body horror, but within Together resides a intense meditation about our choices in loving one another.

A Directorial Debut Investigating Partnership Complexities

Together represents the introductory feature for filmmaker Michael Shanks. It features actors Alison Brie and Dave Franco as a couple named Tim and Millie, an unmarried couple that have stayed together for over ten years. United in marriage in reality in 2017, the two stars bring a particular energy to their roles, masterfully depicting both the good and bad of a long-term relationship.

The narrative begins when Tim and Millie move from the metropolis to the countryside for her career. A commonly used narrative setup, admittedly, but that’s largely where the conventions conclude. Together evolves into as much a deep dive into the psyche of the pair’s relationship as it is a movie featuring biological frights.

A Supernatural Catalyst

While trekking near their rural residence, a tempest descends, and the protagonists tumble into an hole in the earth. After a night spent there and finally finding a way out, a mysterious influence takes hold of the duo. This force creates a otherworldly bond between them that goes exceeding simple connection.

The whole movie is a slow burn of scares, blending moments of dreamlike terrors, disturbing (but not excessively graphic) body horror, and authentically humorous exchanges (sometimes in the middle of something grotesque). The director skillfully blends these components expertly and presents them in a gradually swelling atmosphere of fear.

Complex Characterizations

A great deal of Together is solely the two lead actors, and they masterfully render manifold depths to the dynamic between Tim and Millie. Millie's sense of self and feeling of intimacy is deteriorating due to a distance. Her subconscious resentment of Tim for his unwillingness to pursue anything but his failing musical ambitions inexorably rises.

In contrast, Tim's character experiences isolation and cut off by Millie, who’s the cause they’ve moved to the country and removed from his social circle. He is terrified of the concept of completely losing his individual identity in his partner. This fear is intensified by the fact he does not operate a vehicle and relies on Millie for mobility.

Shanks’ smartest move in this movie refrains from painting either of his characters the clear bad guy.

Tim and Millie face the kind of problems that are inherent in long-term unions after ten years. At their core, they continue to care for each other. They find humor with each other, offer support, and are vulnerable at times. But beneath it all, there’s an unavoidable feeling of questioning about their future together.

Symbolism and Metaphor

While the otherworldly presence in Together act as a metaphor for these fears of unhealthy attachment and totally devoting oneself to a partner, the allegory never feels clumsy or self-important. Instead, these more disturbing, unsettling scenes offer a ideal counterpart to the interpersonal storytelling. Both the horror and the drama serve the other in harmony.

A Divisive Ending

Together’s ending, which won’t be spoiled here, has left audiences divided on the story's concluding statement about codependent relationships. It has been said that single viewers have seen the movie as a compelling reason for remaining unattached. Meanwhile, some couples experiencing tension found that the film ended up guiding them to make up.

Whether you’re single or coupled up, your own response could act as a telling indicator of how you think about commitment. Will the conclusion sow feelings of uneasiness and dread, or a positive outlook on love? Will you see yourself in one of the characters and scream at your TV, or simply turn to your other half and utter, “I understand that choice”?

Regardless of the outcome, Together is an experiment you can embark on right now.

Together is available to watch on Hulu's platform now.
