Seven accused individuals of German far-left group face trial over multiple attacks

A group of seven people accused of being the left-wing extremist organization Antifa Ost began their trial on this week, accused for attacks targeting far-right activists that resulted in the moniker “Hammer Gang”.

Global terror listing and legal charges

Recently, the US government classified Antifa Ost as a terrorist organization along with several other left-wing extremist and anarchist networks.

Authorities in Germany state the group was responsible for attacks on sites in Germany and Hungary between 2018 and 2023. Included in the allegations is the multiple attacks of a business proprietor in Thuringia, whose establishment reportedly served as a gathering spot for rightwing activists.

Some suspects are said to have using hammers against suspected far-right members, leaving some with serious injuries.

Trial details and international connections

Court proceedings involving seven defendants is scheduled to continue until July 2026 in the eastern city of Dresden, Germany. Two defendants, named as Johann G and Paul M., also face charges for attacks in the Hungarian capital during February 2023, around an annual event known as the “day of honour” that attracts rightwing extremists from across Europe.

In a related case, a different German individual, Maja T., is facing trial in Hungary for four counts of attempted assault against neo-Nazis prior to the same rally in 2023.

Regional context and group hierarchy

Eastern Germany has historically served as a breeding ground for both far-right and anti-immigrant youth organizations, as well as the often militant anti-fascist networks that oppose them.

Authorities characterize Johann G as a high-ranking member within Antifa Ost, responsible for planning attacks and bringing in new members.

Alongside Paul M., he is accused of organizing instruction courses where leftwing extremists trained in fighting methods and rehearsed attacks. In storage facilities overseen by the suspect, the network allegedly accumulated tools, irritant sprays, disguises and communication devices.

Prior legal cases and international reactions

A different activist formerly involved with the organization, Lina E., became a cause celebre within some far-left activist circles following her conviction in 2023 for attacks on suspected right-wing individuals.

The US designation makes group members ineligible to enter the United States, freezes any assets they could possess within the world’s largest economy and criminalizes providing material support to them.

Germany's far-right Alternative for Germany applauded the American move and urged the government in Berlin to take similar action. However, the German foreign ministry merely commented it had “acknowledged” of the US designation.

“The threat from the [Antifa Ost] group has substantially diminished lately. Key leaders and particularly violent members have either received convictions or are in custody.”
